Along with 95 other brave souls, I am doing a hot yoga challenge at a studio downtown. What that means is we do a hot yoga class, either 60 or 90 minutes every day for 30 days. I’m currently on day 9. While it has been a challenge to fit it into my schedule it has been so rewarding. I feel so much strength in my body and emotionally it is an incredible stress reliever. I can go into class feeling like I’m going to die and walk out feeling like a million bucks. It is so rejuvenating, empowering and one of the best things I’ve ever done. Plus, it gives me an incredible amount of energy – I can wake up at 4am, do a class at noon and then stay awake until bedtime when normally I would totally crash in the afternoon. It’s amazing.
Some of the things I’ve learned from the instructors that I’m applying in my everyday life:
-you can do anything for just a few more seconds
-all you need to do is breathe
-refuse to judge yourself, your body feels and moves differently every single day
It’s a silent practice so it’s really interesting to try to control your thoughts as you move through the postures. By focusing on the breath, you block out the negative thoughts and feelings that invariably come up. That works well in everyday life too!
So far, it’s amazing. Even if you’re not doing the challenge, I would definitely recommend hot yoga to everyone, even beginners. The heat is very therapeutic and if you’re experienced in yoga, you can definitely take it to the next level!!
