Dalhousie Professor Quits Because of Parking

A professor at Dalhousie University says a severe shortage of parking spaces at the Halifax school has forced him to quit.

Dan Middlemiss and hundreds of other Dalhousie staff and students lined up Monday to buy the first available parking passes.

After waiting for more than an hour, he decided instead to leave his profession of 31 years.

“For a guy like myself that lives in Lower Sackville, I have to get on the road around 6:30 to 7 to get an assured parking spot somewhere so I can get here to teach at 2:30 in the afternoon,” said Middlemiss, an expert on Canadian defence policy.

“It’s ridiculous, in my view, and the university just keeps pretending that it’s not the problem that it is.”

Middlemiss said parking has always been a problem at Dalhousie. But this time, he simply had enough.

“I went straight upstairs, I said, ‘I’m not kidding this time, I don’t have to put up with this. I’m resigning,’” he told CBC News.

Dalhousie, in south-endHalifax, has 2,000 parking spaces for 17,000 students and 3,000 employees.

The rush on passes comes as the university changes its selling policy.

Instead of overselling general passes by 65 per cent, it’s now overselling by only 20 to 30 per cent. The idea is to have fewer people eligible for the same number of parking spots.

Dalhousie is selling 950 passes this week and will sell the rest next Monday when more students arrive on campus.

Some students and staff who waited in line on Monday told CBC News the system was disorganized and a “mess.”

University officials said they didn’t anticipate the long lineup.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Ken Burt, vice-president of finance and administration. “We’ve been selling these parking passes for a number of years and this is the busiest we’ve ever seen them.”

Dalhousie has been grappling with a parking space shortage for some time.

The school plans to turn one of its largest lots into a reserved parking area for about 200 drivers and install more than 100 new bike racks.

There is also a long-term plan in the works that calls for more bike racks, bus passes for staff and a large parking garage.

But Middlemiss doesn’t have to worry about the university’s parking plans anymore.

“Luckily, I don’t have to put up with it,” he said.

The silver trophy was being readied for a helicopter flight fromSt. John’sto Bonavista, the hometown of former Boston Bruin Michael Ryder, when it fell over.

Officials quickly righted the cup and the welcoming ceremony continued.

Ryder, who just signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars, is the second Newfoundlander to bring the Stanley Cup to the province.

Detroit’s Dan Cleary did it in 2008 after the Red Wings defeatedPittsburghin the final series.

This is CRAZY! Don’t try this at home.

Your daily horoscope

IF TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY:

What brings you pleasure? What makes you feel good about yourself? Give it some thought and when you’ve come up with the answer resolve to spend more time doing it over the coming year. If it makes you smile it’s good.

ARIES (March 21 – April 20):

Avoid wishful thinking today but recognize too that wishful thinking and positive thinking are not the same thing. You know what you are capable of (much more than most people) so get out there and make it happen.

TAURUS (April 21 – May 21):

Venus, planet of love, is super strong in the most passionate area of your chart at the moment, so make the most of it and make sure those you are closest to know how you really feel. Say “I love you”, and mean it.

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21):

It will pay you to come on a little less strong today, especially on the work front where certain people are a bit suspicious of your go-getting attitude. Maybe they think you are after their job. Maybe you are!

CANCER (June 22 – July 23):

Enjoy yourself today. Meet up with your favourite friends and do the kind of things that make you laugh. If nothing else it will take your mind off your worries, financial and romantic, and that’s a good thing.

LEO (July 24 – Aug. 23):

You know what needs to be done to resolve a relationship issue and get back on good terms with loved ones, but make sure you can deliver on any promises you make. Better still, don’t make them in the first place.

VIRGO (Aug. 24 – Sept. 23):

With Venus, planet of affection, moving through your sign you will find it easy enough to get your way, but is your way the right way? Listen to advice from those you trust before you act. You still have lots to learn.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 – Oct. 23):

Your merest whim will be catered for by those who adore you today – and, let’s face it, that’s just about everyone. Even the few who resent your popularity will have a hard time turning you down. You’re just too lovable.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 22):

Focus on things that bring you pleasure today and pretend that the bad things do not exist. It’s up to you whether you make yourself happy or make yourself sad – the same amount of effort goes into both.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 – Dec. 21):

You may prefer to deal in facts and figures but today you will have to take so many things on trust. That applies especially to your career where, if you want to get on, you must trust your colleagues.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 20):

Something will inspire you today. Something will grab hold of your imagination and refuse to let go. Don’t fret if it is something that has no practical or financial value. Not everything in life is about the bottom line.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 – Feb. 19):

Not everyone in this world is motivated by selfishness. In fact most people are just like you: kind and considerate and only too glad to help those in need. Who can you help be a better person today?

PISCES (Feb. 20 – Mar. 20):

Would the world be a better place if everyone in it were just like you? Probably. But not everyone has what it takes to be a Pisces. You’re special, and in some small (or big) way today you will prove it.

Someone buy the rights to the Kim Kardashian sex tape

Someone in the Kardashian family I believe is the mystery person who wants to buy the rights to her sex video, who else would care enough to get it off the market after all this time.

Now that she’s a married woman and wants to have a family it’s obvious that she doesn’t want her kids to see it one day.

Kim Kardashian Mystery Buyer Wants Sex Tape OFF THE MARKET

0829_kim_k_sex_tape
Someone is looking to buy the rights to the Kim Kardashian sex tape from Vivid Entertainment … claiming they’re willing to pay big bucks to “completely remove it from the market.”

TMZ has learned the mystery buyer has hired a lawyer in Tennessee — who fired off a letter to Vivid honcho Steve Hirsch yesterday which reads, “I was approached by a private party who has asked us about looking into the possibility of acquiring all rights of the Vivid, ‘Kim Kardashian Sex Tape.’”

The lawyer adds, “The party we represent does not intend to distribute or broadcast the ‘tape,’ but hopes to completely remove it from the market.”

The buyer also wants to purchase all of the raw, unused footage (sex tape outtakes) that never made it to the DVD.

The lawyer never identifies his client — but leaves a giant hint … writing, “We would purchase any other footage you may have control of that involves Ms. Kardashian.”

The lawyer NEVER mentions the other person in the tape — Ray J.

Sources close to Kim wouldn’t tell us if the reality star is the mystery buyer … but did reveal that Kim has previously shown interest in buying the rights to the tape.

Justin Bieber Hosting Rebooted Version of MTV’s “Punk’d”?

I liked Punk’d when it was around, it was funny to see celebrities freak out!

I think Justin Bieber will do an ok job he’ll grow with it and become great at it plus it helps that he knows a lot of celebs too so they wont be to upset in the end with him!

The New York Post reports that Justin Bieber is hosting a rebooted version of MTV’s “Punk’d.”

According to the paper, Bieber’s first victim was Taylor Swift, whom he supposedly pranked last week after having taken over for original host Ashton Kutcher.

While the prank-loving singer may have very well played a joke on his friend Swift, a rep for the singer tells Gossip Cop he’s NOT hosting a new version of the show.

We’ll update when we find out more.

California is not looking in the mirror for the next year!

Image Via Google

A blogger in  Can you imagine? And she’s getting married in October.

6 months before my wedding, I decided to go without mirrors. For a year. This blog documents the attempt.

She’s already been at it since March.

There’s sheets over her mirror’s at home and her rules include not looking in reflective surfaces like windows. The only mirrors she glances at are the side and rear view mirrors when she drives–but she’s careful not to sneak a look at herself.

Could you go a day without looking in the mirror? A week? The year????

Inside Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s romantic weekend in Toronto

These two seem to have a hard time letting each other go.

Sometimes in relationships it’s ok to step away from each other for a little bit because in some cases it makes you stronger or helps you realize that being on your own is better and maybe that’s what they are trying to figure out!

Life & Style exclusive: Inside Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s romantic weekend in Toronto

Justin_jessica_spl177030_001.jpg

Talk about a happy rendezvous! Life & Style can exclusively reveal that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were side-by-side the entire weekend in Toronto, where the two shared multiple cups of coffee, dinners and brunches together! “Justin and Jessica came into Ella’s Uncle coffee shop not once but three times this weekend: Saturday evening, Sunday morning and just this morning,” an eyewitness tells Life & Style. “They seemed so comfortable, happy and at ease every time.”

“They literally couldn’t stop staring and smiling at each other,” the eyewitness explains, adding that the pair were as cute as ever: “Justin seemed completely smitten with Jessica, and she had this permanent smile on her face, and they joked around with each other. Jessica even recommended Justin get her favorite, the Americano, but Justin opted for the Ella, a double cappuccino with maple syrup.”

They certainly needed the extra caffeine: On Sunday the pair enjoyed a bike ride together on Queen St. West. That same day, they stopped for a cozy brunch at Swan Restaurant.

“Yes, they came into Swan together and sat in the back,” a second eyewitness tells Life & Style. “Justin had scrambled eggs and Jessica had an omelet. Jessica must have suggested it because Justin’s not here very often, but she comes in a lot.” And the always-funny Justin kept Jessica fully entertained. “They were laughing and having such a good time,” the second eyewitness adds. “They enjoyed their food, but they seemed to enjoy each other much more!”

Justin, who is due back in New York City, recently revealed that he’s definitely not over Jessica: “She is the single most significant person in my life,” Justin said.
