Q. I’d like to wear sequins for the party season, but now that they are appropriate for day, how can I make them cool for night? A. You’ve got to get away from the jeans-plus-sparkly-tank combo. The rules: Choose a top that has a simple shape (like a T-shirt, basic crewneck or V-neck sweater, or a cardigan) but plenty of embellishment. Next, pair it with shorts. This prevents the kind of faux pas that often occur when wearing bling tops (sequins, lamé, lurex and other) with party skirts or dressy pants. Go for textured tights (lace or cable-knit, for example) to add another fabric, and finish the look with masculine-inspired brogues. (Wedges are fine too, if you like the extra height.) And that sequined dress? Keep it for when a black-tie invitation comes in the mail.
